To name organisms, binomial nomenclature, created by Carolus Linnaeus is used by scientists. Every organism has a unique scientific name that consists of two parts. The first part is the organism’s genus name and the second part is the organism’s species name. There are three rules that must be followed when naming organisms:
- The genus name must be capitalized
- The species name must NOT be capitalized
- Both names must either be in italics or underlined
