Plants are living organisms apart of the Plantae kingdom, which can also be known as “green plants”. These organisms are very diverse and can be found all around the world, with 300-315 thousand different species. Plants are both terrestrial and aquatic living things, and they are sessile meaning that they don’t move. These organisms provide most of the world’s molecular oxygen. Plants are multicellular, have cell walls, and also have cellulose. In order to obtain their energy, plants carry out photosynthesis which is when they obtain energy from the sunlight. These organisms are autotrophs, which means that they make their own food, instead of feeding on other organisms. Plants reproduce sexually and asexually, and while most are free-living, some can also be parasitic. The life expectancy of these organism rages anywhere from less than a day to entire centuries. Plants play a large role in keeping an ecosystem healthy for various reasons. Firstly, these organisms provide most of the world’s molecular oxygen. As well, plants provide food sources as well as habitats to other organisms. Although these organisms may be taken for granted, Earth as we known it would not be the same without plants.
